The effort to stop Warren Buffet and the BNSF from building a dirty, polluting railyard next to an overburdened Long Beach community required years of research, analysis, education and political organizing, but has been successful. Winning took lots of hard work, and partnerships between grassroots community groups, public health experts, local government, and environmental organizations.
“This has been a 10-year-long community fight,” said Mark Lopez, executive director of the nonprofit East Yard Communities for Environmental Justice. “What would be an economic win for BNSF would be a health loss in our community. If BNSF doesn’t fundamentally understand that, it’s exactly why they are in the position they are now.”
