A few very interesting quotes from Inside EPA, on comments made by EPA Administrator Gina McCarthy on citizen science during a recent meeting of the EPA Science Advisory Board.
I’ve asked EPA for a written copy of her comments, and if they are available, will share them here.
McCarthy said that the agency was looking for a greater role of “citizen science” and making more information publicly available to prompt broader public engagement. The question isn’t about “starting from scratch and what EPA can do” but how to build collaborations, she said.
“Citizen science is going to be critical,” she said. “I love it. It engages people, it gets them wading in streams and looking at what’s important to them in their own communities.”
